Tressa “Azarel” Smallwood is an award-winning Producer and Founder of MegaMind Media, a production company specializing in creating compelling original content for female audiences. Tressa resigned from teaching tenure to fulfill her writing dreams in 2003. A true trailblazer, she turned her debut bestselling novel into a multi-million-dollar publishing company that amassed thousands of fans worldwide with over 162+ titles. Known for her razor-sharp business acumen and as a businesswoman who practices the hustle she preaches, she deeply understands what it takes to create success from scraps, and how to build highly profitable ventures from the ground up.
Tressa has produced over seventeen projects including Secrets, Holiday Heartbreak, All In, Trophy Wife, The Sound of Christmas, and Dear Best Friend. An advocate for mental health, Tressa recently partnered with BET Networks to produce their annual Black Women’s Mental Health Initiative series designed to bring awareness to an underrepresented area. These series entitled The Waiting Room and The Couch were indeed a labor of love and have received critical lauds for each of its three years of original films.
Tressa has worked alongside some of the industry greats such as Lamman Rucker, LisaRaye McCoy, KJ Smith, Bill Bellamy, Clifton Powell and more. Her films have also given unprecedented opportunities for noteworthy actors such as Vivica Fox, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Victoria Rowell, Meagan Good Kim Fields, Tichina Arnold and Sheryl Lee Ralph to step behind the camera as directors, paving a path for the diversity that the world deserves.
In 2019, Tressa’s film “ALL IN” received awards from the American Black Film Festival and BET Networks. Her films can be seen on platforms such as BET Networks, BETPLUS, ALLBLACK, TVONE, TUBI and more. Since launching her distribution arm of MegaMInd Media, Smallwood has given unprecedented opportunities to up and coming filmmakers and recently became a member of the Producers Guild of America.
Tressa “Azarel” Smallwood spends her time juggling motherhood, marriage, and empowering creatives. She is currently developing “Greenwood Avenue” based on Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, which is being Executive Produced by Morris Chesnut and directed by the legendary Bill Duke. She also recently partnered with comedian, Kountry Wayne to produce “Strange Love,” that hits theaters October 2022.
