This month is Pride Month, when we take the opportunity to celebrate the progress made in achieving equality for the LGBTQ+ community, while acknowledging the work that still remains. This year, we also mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City. This moment in history jumpstarted a wave of LGBTQ+ political activism across the country, that went on to secure crucial rights and protections.
For many, Pride signifies a time to celebrate love and acceptance. This month, celebrate Pride by taking action to support the ongoing work towards LGBTQ+ equality.
- Educate Yourself. Find out what ongoing legislation exists on both the state and national level that addresses LGBTQ+ rights or where your state may be falling behind. Check out this resource created by the ACLU to get you started.
- Learn More About The Movement. Honor the long history of the LGBTQ+ equality movement by visiting memorial sites and museums near you. Today, the National Stonewall Monument launched a virtual monument to allow people around the world to access the stories and histories of the events at Stonewall as well as the history of LGBTQ+ activism in the United States. You can enter the virtual monument here.
- Support LGBTQ+ Businesses. Research businesses in your area that are run by or actively supporting the LGBTQ+ community and support them with your patronage.
